Image: KBR News Agency

Is the Men’s Model Really the Standard?

In the summer of 2026, Alexia Putellas, the “queen” who had won the Ballon d’Or twice, left European champions Barcelona to join London City Lionesses (LCL), who rent a men’s third-division club’s stadium. While expectations are high that the women’s football market will reach a $1 billion scale by 2027, a FIFPRO survey reveals that many of the world’s top female players still live on annual salaries below £15,000 (about ¥2.9 million), and nearly half are considering early retirement due to financial insecurity and mental exhaustion.

Caught between this dazzling spotlight and harsh reality, American entrepreneur Michele Kang says, “Let’s stop treating women as ‘small men.'” But is the male football model we unconsciously use as a template truly so perfect?

Let’s first look at the “shadows” cast by men’s football.

Speculative money has flowed in, club finances have swollen, and lax management has driven teams to the brink of bankruptcy. Commercialism accelerates, and players are exhausted by congested schedules. Some are scouted and raised in academies from their early teens, while others are swept away by big money at a young age. FIFA corruption is no longer surprising.

Looking at the bigger picture, recent men’s football feels almost reckless, as if it’s accelerating toward a wall. Rather than a role model, it might be more like a runaway train tumbling uncontrollably down a slope.

Given this reality, perhaps it’s time for women’s football to stop and reconsider whether it really needs to follow the same path. Here, let’s use the “3P (Perception, Perspective, Paradigm)” framework (see above) to explore what kind of future women’s sports could envision.
